Camber Sands Beach in East Sussex

By Carol Brazel, May 8 2017 04:43PM

Our holiday cottages at Camber Sands are just a few minutes stroll from this awe inspiring beach. You will read on many websites that the beach is 7 miles of glorious sand, I’m not so sure about that I think it’s more like 3 miles when measured from end to end, but still plenty of sand for everyone.

The quickest and our preferred way to the beach is via the sand dunes opposite The Gallivant restaurant. However, this route is not for everyone and there is an alternative route which provides level access just a short walk along the Old Lydd Road via the main car park.

Facilities at the beach include toilets, a few cafés, bars and shops selling mainly beach goods (not all open outside the peak summer season). Sun loungers and parasols can be hired during summer season. Our cottages have windbreaks, picnic rugs, beach chairs, a cool bag and freezer blocks as well as a section of beach toys for guests use.

The beach is cleaned daily and to ensure it is a safe environment for all its users, the beach is zoned into separate areas with activities such as kite surfing kept to the far east end and the central and western section for less hectic pastimes. We also have life guards on duty now during the summer season (please check dates and times online). Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round but from 1st May - 30th September dogs are restricted to the area to the west of our usual access point and to the east of the central area. Horse riding is allowed on the beach at low tide all year round but during the summer months is restricted to before 8:30 am and after 7pm. At low tide the sea recedes by about half a mile leaving small pools and lagoons which are ideal for children to splash about in safely. The tide times can be checked easily online or you can download an app to your phone.

In recent years Camber Sands has become very popular for activities such as kite surfing, kite bugging, kite boarding, and land yachting. The zone set aside for this is at the far east of the beach at Broomhill where additional parking is available. Sports equipment can be stored safely and securely at both our cottages. Coast magazine recently recommended Camber Sands as number 1 UK beach for land sports (September 2016 edition).

For those of us after a more genteel form of exercise Camber Sands has numerous rights-of-way. Rye (3 miles away) can be reached via an informal footpath along the beach and along the dunes and/ or cycle path on foot in about an hour. The traffic free cycle path (part of the National Cycle Route 2) is ideal for a family bike ride into Rye. Bikes can be stored securely in shed or garage at our cottages.

Camber Sands is also a haven for wildlife, the dunes are home too over 250 different species of plants and animals and an important site for wintering birds including hen harriers and short-eared owls. Camber Sands is the only sand dune system in East Sussex.

Camber Sands beach is beautiful all year round, we have many guests who stay again and again for weekends during the autumn and winter months. What could be nicer on a chilly afternoon than a refreshing walk on the beach and then returning to your cosy, warm cottage for a hot chocolate and a film?
